Bailey & John-Michaels beautiful wedding in Puerto Rico last fall.  I had so much fun working with Bailey to create all of the fun, vibrant stationery.  The ombre lettering was totally her idea and I LOVE how it turned out!

RECENT WORK : ASHLEY + JOSH’S WINTER PARK FARMERS MARKET WEDDING

These are a few photos from a beautiful wedding I had the pleasure of photographing and painting for this past spring.  The wedding was at the Winter Park Farmers Market, I loved this venue and the surrounding area in downtown Winter Park.  Seriously perfect!  I created the invitation suite, cocktail signs, cookie table signs, and table numbers all using watercolor.  The seating chart was made from a piece of wood purchased at home depot and hand painted with acrylic paint.  Hop over to my photography site to see more photos from Ashley + Josh’s day…

RECENT WORK : CHATEAU LA DURANTIE WEDDING

I thought this beautiful wedding would be the perfect post to get me back into blogging after my summer vacation.  Stephanie & Mario got married in France this Spring and I had the pleasure of creating stationery for the day.  It was all captured so perfectly by Rory Wylie Photography.  French Wedding Styled featured us on their blog this past week, view the whole post here

I have so much to catch up on here.  Lots of fun projects from early Summer, some new exciting collaborations in the mix, AND my travel photos from Iceland (which I cannot wait to go through and edit).  I’m jumping right back into wedding festivities with my friends nuptials this weekend.  I’ll be sure to share their pretty stationery soon as well.

CALLIGRAPHY : WESLEY’S SIP & SEE PARTY

Some of the sweet things I painted for Wesley’s sip and see this past weekend.  Sarah knows how to throw a good party and I was delighted to lend my talents to this cuteness!  Wesley was so precious and content the whole time, even while being passed around and taking quick naps in between.  Such a good idea, to have everyone over at once to mingle and meet him (plus catch up with friends and drink mimosa!)  So fun! Jump over to Sarah’s blog for more details and photos.

RECENT WORK : GARDEN PARTY INSPIRED

I loved creating this suite and pretty garden-y menu for a recent wedding.  We took inspiration from my ‘Tuscan Inspired‘ suite that was featured on Ruffled Blog and Weddings Illustrated last year!  I used the leafy details in the corners while changing the floral colors, darkening the leaves, and thickening the letter style.  The darker hunter green color was mixed by using a few of my greens and I love how it turned out. The original designs were hand painted and lettered using gouache paint.

WEEKEND NOTES

Some favorite things that started coming together this past week / weekend.
Excited to introduce some new simple calligraphy prints to the shop this week. I ordered some samples of recent client projects to shoot, lots of pretty greenery lately.  Spring has definitely arrived and influenced my mood, as I’ve been using these soft muted colors a lot and painting dainty florals.
We had a weekend filled with family and good food, our nephew and my sister both had birthdays that were celebrated. We ate dinner at our favorite restaurants, did a bit of shopping, and somehow I managed to still paint in between.

REAL WEDDING : THE GUNN’S ROMANTIC OLD FLORIDA AFFAIR

Working on a local wedding often means for a friend or that my friends will in some way be involved in the creative process.  In the case of Jen & Alan’s beautiful wedding, it was both.  Jen and I went to the same high school.  Several of her bridesmaid are close mutual friends and my best, Camilyn Beth made the gorgeous bridesmaids dresses! The dreamy photography is by Michelle March .  I created several hand painted and lettered elements for their day including the wooden welcome sign, cocktail signs, and drink dispensers.  Phillippi Creek served as the perfect backdrop, it’s one of my favorite venues here as it just feels so old Florida to me.  Hanging moss, a long wooden dock, and the most gorgeous rooms for getting ready complete with pastels and floral wallpaper.  There’s also a room with a turquoise ceiling! The colors of these pictures are just so soft and dreamy.

RECENT WORK : RED & WHITE FARM INSPIRED

I loved revisiting this suite to customize it for a recent client.  Lately, I’ve been doing a lot of watercolor work on white paper but it’s so fun to switch it up sometimes.  I love a good, bright background with white lettering!
This is available for customization in the shop.

NATIONAL HANDWRITING DAY

I typically roll my eyes at the “national [insert random object] days” but with one like handwriting, I guess I can’t help but indulge in the silliness of honoring this special day.
I looked for some quotes about handwriting to letter for this post, the only thing that really struck me were a few about it being a lost art and to think about how important handwriting used to be.  There was a day when letters were the only form of communication, I mean that’s crazy (and kind of awesome).
I was then lead to think about my journey and love for lettering.  How did this happen anyways? That I have created a job partially dealing with my handwriting?  If you would have told me this years ago it would have been confusing and funny. Years ago when I was lettering my name and the names of my friends over and over on wide ruled paper instead of listening to my teacher in class… I guess that’s how it started. I remember getting boxes upon boxes of new markers all the time.  I had all the fun crayola ones.  I’m not sure when I had time for this in class but I made tons of “signs” for my friends all the time.  I was constantly writing my name on a page underneath the paper I was taking notes.  I was a cheerleader and would always be asked to make signs for the games, our hallway, any school event really.  Heather would do it with me, which is just hilarious because she is designing stationery these days as well (hi Paper Please!) To make a long story short, fast forward all those years (while keeping in mind that every stage of my life that involved me being in a classroom, there was doodling involved) and “modern calligraphy” started popping up around the web.  It was funny to me that people were “selling their handwriting”.  I thought, I know and love this, I could do that.  With the help of some friends passing on a few small jobs, I tried my hand in professional handwriting.  Over the past three years I’ve written and written and written some more. Through many trials and experiments, my writing grew into something I love.  Something I am proud of and excited to share with others.  It…is…mind-blowing!
I’m going to wrap this up with a story.  For the majority of my life grandparents have lived out of state.  For as long as I remember, my grandmother has sent me (and many others) handwritten cards and letters.  They didn’t mean as much as a child but as an adult calligrapher it is truly a prize.  She still loves to write letters to this day.  She writes A LOT of letters. When I visited them early last year she made a comment about being proud of me for writing and making handwritten things.  She mentioned that schools once taught penmanship and today most people don’t even know a true cursive alphabet.  This year for Christmas, she gave me a book filled with some photos, letters I had sent her as a child, and then pages upon pages of her handwriting telling her story.  Tears filled my eyes as I opened such a priceless gift.  Something I will always treasure. I can’t wait to finish reading it and then visit them again to hear more stories.
Leaving people notes and sending letters is so special and personal.  I’m thankful I will always have something written from most of my family members and my close friends.  Step away from the e-mail today and send someone you love some snail mail.  Your handwriting doesn’t have to be perfect, just meaningful.

A BRIGHT, BOLD CREST

Making crests are so much fun, a process, but fun none the less.  You can see here how my scatterbrained sketches turn into the final product.  I like to see how my mess of florals, initials, and lettering comes together so nicely in the end.  I worked with Amy to create something bright and colorful, something that would reflect their wedding day and personal style.  We ended up with a more simple save the date as well. I love to see how people end up incorporating their crests into their wedding design.  So great! xx

REAL WEDDINGS : BRIGHT DAY OF STATIONERY

I loved creating these bright watercolor signs for an upcoming wedding in puerto rico.  I love when brides want lots of day of stationery that matches their invitation suite, signs are just so fun! For this, I created an 8″ x 10″ guest book sign and “love is sweet” for the dessert table.  The dessert names are 4″ x 6″ to frame next to their accompanying sweets.  The cocktail and find your seat signs are 11″ x 14″ and the menu was done on an 16″ x 20″ cold pressed watercolor art board (these are offered in my shop).  The watercolor escort cards are standard tented card stock.  The bride found the cute glitter tags on Etsy, these will double over as place cards and favor tags.  I hand painted each item with gouache paint (except the glitter tags, the white is acrylic paint).

HELLO SEPTEMBER + AUGUST ROUNDUP

I’m a little late on welcoming September this week (with open arms might I add).  I had a great summer that flew by so fast.  I’ve been so busy working on client and personal projects over the past couple months.  Above are some of my recent favorites!  I have a couple exciting collabs in the works and am working on some products for the holidays!  I know this fall is going to bring great things (and lots of pumpkin spice).  I’m looking forward to cooler temperatures but first taking this month to get organized before the craziness hits.  I always feel like once October comes it just flies by, as there is always so much to do over the holidays.  Trying to make my days last as long as possible and savor each month. I’ve been a little quite over here lately, but I always post some sneak peeks on Instagram (@shannonkirsten) in case you’re interested in keeping up!

RECENT WORK : A QUIRKY CREST DESIGN

The final design above and a bit of my process below…

I was absolutely delighted when wedding planner, Emily Starr got in touch to create this really fun crest design for her clients upcoming wedding.  When I saw the color palette and was asked about including these animals, I knew this project was meant for me!  The pig and the deer have significant meaning relating to the bride’s last name and the grooms actual family crest. I just did the designing and gave them to file, they plan to print on various day of paper goods and I can’t wait to see!
I used all watercolor / gouache paint for this design.  As you can see, there is no such method to my madness (unfortunately).  Sometimes it’s just easier for me to paint larger (I feel I can paint with more detail that way) then scale everything down and piece it together once I scan.  I use Photoshop to put the elements together.  Hey, it’s whatever works!
I love seeing the ways people use crests, monograms, heraldry these days.  It doesn’t have to be just for your wedding! You could have a fun painting with meaningful icons created for you and your family to display as art.  The best part, it doesn’t have to be like actual traditional heraldry… you can pick elements and colors that reflect you best.

BRIGHT BLOOMS

A recently customized suite based off of my original boho design (we just took out the beetle and added more flowers).  I love creating things like this…the loose watercolor style is my favorite.
I used gouache and canson watercolor paper to create the original designs.  I then had them printed on a linen textured card stock to maintain the painterly effect.  Green envelopes are from Paper Source.

AROUND THE STUDIO

As predicted, January has flown by already (insert sad face).  I cannot believe how busy and great the past month has been, I’m so thankful.  I have been working nonstop but I guess this what I signed up for!  I have a ton of flowers sitting around from a valentines shoot this week so it has been fun to use them for styling.  Unfortunately, I’ve only had time to snap these few pictures on my ipad but I wanted to share a couple new things:
I finally lettered my favorite Robert Frost quote, those will be up in the shop soon / Calligraphy for weddings like crazy lately…loved this choice of greens / The Je t’aime looked so cute printed I decided to make it an 8 x 10 for my shop (it will stay up for always, not just Valentines)

2014 : LETS DO THIS

Happy New Year friends!
I am a few days late on officially starting my new year due to traveling and today I am so happy to be back at my desk, creating and diving right in.  I am not one to really set “resolutions”.  However, I have been thinking about my hopes and dreams for 2014 and all that I want to accomplish.  There is so much I want to do this year and so many exciting things already in the works.  I’m feeling really blessed.  It is a little overwhelming to sit down and make a list of goals, so I have been trying to take my time thinking long and hard about the future of my business and also personal things I would like to change / accomplish.  One major thing (that you may have noticed already taking shape) is updating my branding for my illustration AND photography.  It is so hard to design for yourself right? I can’t even say how many variations of my name I’ve painted in the past few months.  I’m finally so pleased with the way it is all coming together! I still have things to update but it’s all coming right along.
I began creating a new portfolio site as well.  Etsy is my favorite way to sell but I’ve been wanting a place to display past / custom work and explain a bit of my process.  I’m hoping the blog will be a place for sharing things like that more often as well.  Check out all my recent updates (for illustration / design work) in the links below:
Cheers to 2014, the best is yet to come.

THE HOLIDAY COLLECTION IS HERE!

I’m so thrilled to have a little holiday collection complete and in the shop this morning! There are 10 new greeting card designs to choose from, a 2014 wall calendar, and some other fun gifty items.  I am especially excited about my new products because I have recently switched printers and upgraded to finer papers, I couldn’t be happier with the quality!  All designs are printed on a premium, thick matte card stock, scored, and folded to perfection.  The sets are packaged in kraft paper stationery boxes and tied up with my favorite black and gold bakers twine.  The single cards come in a protective clear sleeve.  I used mostly watercolor, gouache, and ink to create the original designs.
I hope you enjoy sending some of these holiday cards to your friends and family this year.  If you have questions or custom requests feel free to e-mail me at shannonkcouch@gmail.com or get in touch through Etsy message.  Follow on bloglovin for new updates, products, and special offers through the holidays.

VOTE FOR ME // MARTHA STEWART AMERICAN MADE

Hi friends,
I feel quite annoying to ask people to vote, it’s not something I normally do.  However, this contest is amazing and comes with a possible great opportunity for small American Made businesses.  This was created to celebrate and support local handmade creatives.  So, if you love my work and have a few spare minutes this week I would so appreciate it if you could go on and vote for me.  You will notice the green button to the right side of my blog, just click on that to go straight to my profile.  You can vote up to 6 times a day through September 7th.  I cannot see who votes or how many times so you don’t have to feel like a total creep going on there and clicking 6 times in a row. haha. Promise I won’t ask for a favor like this for awhile.  YOU’RE THE BEST!
xx

RECENT WORK FEATURED ON 100 LAYER CAKE

I shared these invitations and signs awhile back but today I am thrilled to have them featured with an amazing group of vendors from Inez and Matthew’s wedding.  Inez was the sweetest and of course it’s always a pleasure to work with Sarah Tucker Events!

IN THE STUDIO // CALLIGRAPHY IN PROCESS

This is a little sneak peek of some projects to come.  I’m beyond excited to have my calligraphy and invitations in a styled shoot this weekend.  I will be dying to see and share photos! I’m also working on more calligraphy options and other holiday things to add to the shop soon.  I got these vintage stamps on Etsy recently.  One of my favorite things about putting an invitation suite together is picking little details like stamps and liner colors, they just add that much more to the design.

FALL WOODSY WEDDING PHOTO SHOOT

I recently created some custom paper goods to be part of this beautifully styled shoot by Best Photography.  I love the fall woodsy theme so much.  How beautiful is this location?  The pictures came out gorgeous.  I painted the wedding suite, map, leaf escort cards, and all the signage.

RECENT WORK : LETTERS ON LETTERS

A few projects from last week.  I did ALOT of lettering! I also added some new items to my shop, like the top “mermaid” print. I’m loving the ombre and thinking I need to stray from my usual black and white more often.

RECENT WORK : WATERCOLOR LOGO

This is a recent logo I created for amazing photographer duo, Best Photography.  They just launched a brand new beautiful site! I loved playing with watercolor brush strokes for this project.
I included a few of the originals (below) just for some “behind the scenes” of my process, if you will.  We started out considering two colors for the strokes, then down to just a blush / coral color.  I ended making a thinner brush stroke due to their websites new layout.  I liked them all but the simplicity of the final one was just perfect for their new branding and site!

RECENT WORK : RED, WHITE, & BLUE INSPIRED

Inspired by red, white, and blue this week, I decided to create this sample suite for my shop. I love the colored envelopes so much and I finally got to use my vintage American flag stamps!
I’m in the process of creating an entire collection of invitations for my shop.  They will be available “as is” and also for color customizing (and of course the calligraphy is all custom).  I can’t wait to share more soon.
